Excerpt from a letter about my brother-in-law's passing

I don't want to say this out loud, but I don't want to not say it either: Somewhere in the middle of the night between Saturday, August 25th and Sunday, August 26th, my wife's baby brother, Sky, took a gun and shot and killed himself.

Sky was a beautiful, loving, kind, funny, radiant, amazing man. He was only 28 years old and had suffered depression most of his teenage and adult life, which was only compounded by his mother's untimely death from cancer when he was 19 years old, followed by the death of his father six years later. I grieve for the pain he endured and couldn't survive, pain I knew only too well from my bouts of depression at that same age and younger.

There but for the grace of g-d could have gone I.

I'm still trying to wrap my mind around the fact that beautiful, loving, kind, funny, radiant, and amazing Sky took a gun and ended his life with it. I just feel a big empty numbness in my heart for all the love that I have for Sky that has no avenue to express itself anymore.

If ever I wanted a Mulligan, a do-over, a rewind button on life, this is it.

Anyway, I didn't want to thunk this awful news into your otherwise beautiful day, but I didn't want to not tell you either. I thought you would want to know. At whatever time seems appropriate, please tell whomever you think would want to know.

I wanted to call, but I am wrung out talking about it.
